Head coach of the home-based senior national team Maxwell Konadu says his side will be using the WAFU tournament as preparations towards next year’s Africa Nations Championship slated for South Africa.
Ghana have been drawn in a ‘difficult’ Group C of the 2014 CHAN which includes Libya, Ethiopia and Congo Brazzaville. The Championship meant for players in their indigenous leagues kicks off on January 11 in South Africa.
“We are planning to have the best of preparations for the CHAN tournament. There is a WAFU tournament which will be hosted by Ghana in the coming months; we will be representing the country with the local Black Stars team. We will use it as one of our preparatory tournaments among a few friendlies before January,” Maxwell Konadu said.
Accra will be hosting the third edition of the West African Football Union (Zone B) Nations Cup which will have eight countries pooled in two groups to take part at the tournament that runs from November 21 to December 1.
The Abidjan-based Wafu Zone B has seven countries: Ghana, Nigeria, Togo, Benin, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Niger and will be joined by special guests Zimbabwe from the COSAFA region to form the 8-team tournament. Like the CHAN, the WAFU tournament is also limited to local-based players.
